Opening classroom doors in Ethiopia's most remote kebeles.
Since 2006, RLDO has partnered with Pestalozzi Children's Foundation (PCF) and Help a Child (HaC) to deliver pre-primary and primary education services in remote rural areas of Sidama Zone.
The first intervention provided quality basic education to over 3,800 out-of-school children across 4 kebeles of Melga woreda. Older children also received school-based vocational skills training — embroidery and knitting, hairdressing, and candle making — targeted at the poorest of the poor family members. Most graduates are now self-employed, and eight needy girls formed a self-help group to continue their education independently.
As community need grew, RLDO designed an expanded program linking pre-primary education to primary schools in the rural settings of Dale and Wonsho woredas — reaching 4,800 needy children with 60% girls' enrollment at entry level across 6 schools. Additional education projects have been implemented with support from the Embassy of Japan across Sidama districts.
